Overview

The agriculture sector is the 8th largest contributor to Madinah’s GVA, with currently 22,370 agricultural holdings in the region. The main agriculture products in Madinah city include dates, honey, mint, chicken, vegetables and fish. Demand for dates exports has grown at nearly 5% CAGR between 2007 and 2016, indicating a potential The region currently employs traditional irrigation methods, leading to an increased use of water. As of 2018, there was a limitation on fodder and cereal crops due to water scarcity.

Key Observations

Madinah ranks among the lowest users of technology per unit of cropland and still relies on traditional agriculture techniques

Although Al Madinah’s date yields is low, the region is a large contributor to KSA’s date production and is stirred by international demand

Due to water scarcity within Al Madinah region, several types of crops have been discontinued
