Vertical & Community Agriculture

The Vertical and Community Agriculture initiative enables year-round crops production in controlled environments using the latest hydroponic systems and LED technology. Since Al Madinah’s landscape and environment impact crop yields and the products quality, fully-controlled agricultural conditions can enable production even during the summer and in areas considered less suited for agricultural activities. By leveraging Vertical & Community Agriculture, Al Madinah city would encourage vertical crop growth to achieve healthier yields while minimizing carbon footprint. Not only does Vertical & Community Agriculture protect plant from external environmental conditions, but also leverages controlled indoor spaces and specialized lighting solutions, leading to reduced water and energy consumptions. These farms can begin to spread across the city, reducing the production lead time and allowing communities and individuals to play a role in the sector development. More so, certain forms of vertical and community farms may appear in balconies, rooftops and lobbies of large buildings. This would allow buildings to naturally cool and reduce the need for climate control, eventually reducing power tariffs.

KEY

CHALLENGES

Farmers are still using traditional farming methods, leading to inefficient production, misuse of resources, and lack of crop diversity

Sector stakeholders are unaware of sustainability commitments and environmental responsibility principles

KEY EXPECTED BENEFITS

Enhanced Produce Quality

The quality of crop yields will increase due to tailored and controlled indoor conditions (e.g. lighting, temperature, humidity, water, soil)

Increased Production

Farmers will enjoy year-round crop growth and maximized produce outputs due to protection from external conditions (e.g. weather, land fertility) in vertical farming

Sustainable Consumption

Energy and water consumption will be optimally monitored as vertical farms provide a controlled-environment agriculture

Less Cost

Farmers will bear less cost on transportation of food since vertical farms can be applicable in rural areas

USE CASE

JOURNEY

Zeinab is an entrepreneur planning to establish an agritourism start-up. She is concerned about the impact of the environment on crop yields and the quality of crops produced. She finds out about the vertical & community agriculture platform and decides to create her own vertical farm to ensure a more various and efficient leveraging the platform to get advices and support form professionals.

Using the latest hydroponic systems and LED technology, the crops are grown year-round in an optimum pesticide-free environment. Vertical and community agriculture allowed Zeinab to grow her crops in smaller spaces, while minimizing energy and water consumption.

In addition, Zeinab adjusted her air conditioning system to ensure an ambient temperatures to her crops and control humidity and CO2 levels for optimal yields, enabling an agribusiness setting capable of growing products all year long.
