Vertical & Community Agriculture
The Vertical and Community Agriculture initiative enables year-round crops production in controlled environments using the latest hydroponic systems and LED technology. Since Al Madinah’s landscape and environment impact crop yields and the products quality, fully-controlled agricultural conditions can enable production even during the summer and in areas considered less suited for agricultural activities. By leveraging Vertical & Community Agriculture, Al Madinah city would encourage vertical crop growth to achieve healthier yields while minimizing carbon footprint. Not only does Vertical & Community Agriculture protect plant from external environmental conditions, but also leverages controlled indoor spaces and specialized lighting solutions, leading to reduced water and energy consumptions. These farms can begin to spread across the city, reducing the production lead time and allowing communities and individuals to play a role in the sector development. More so, certain forms of vertical and community farms may appear in balconies, rooftops and lobbies of large buildings. This would allow buildings to naturally cool and reduce the need for climate control, eventually reducing power tariffs.
